Happy May Day!

There is nothing more cheerful than the friendly blooms that start to emerge everywhere around us.

This month’s mini block celebrates all of those spring blooms and hopefully adds some cheer to your space.

Fiore is such a fun block to make and utilizes many of my favorite quilting techniques.

To finish the block, it does require some diagonal cutting which can be a little nerve wracking.

But I believe in you! You can do this! And if it doesn’t go well (which it won’t!) you can always whip up another block really easily.

And just to be really sure that you’re successful at this block (and all the minis!), here are 4 tips for accurate and precise piecing.

Accurate Piecing

Now before we get started, let’s just give a disclaimer here, you can quilt however you want.

No matching corners? Totally okay. Curves where there shouldn’t be? Totally okay.

Really these tips are for anyone looking for some simple ways to get blocks that are accurate to the written pattern.

1: Use the Right Tools

You don’t need a lot of tools in quilting (my husband would disagree), but you do need ones that are going to provide the cleanest cuts and most accurate measurements.

Ensure that rulers are accurate and have the correct measurements.

Mats also should be precise in their measurements. You’d be surprised at how many mats are not accurate!

New rotary blades provide clean cuts that don’t require too much extra pressure.

Pins should be sharp and straight (although I’m definitely guilty of using dull bent pins!).

2: Your iron is your best friend

I’m convinced quilting is 10% sewing, 10% unpicking and 80% ironing. (or something along those lines)

Make sure that in between each step, you’re pressing the pieces open.

Using a clapper can make seams extra flat and is highly regarded by many professional quilters.

I find after ironing, there is always a little a little warping, and I usually take a little bit of time to resquare my blocks or units, especially for log cabin style piecing.

3: Consistent Seam Allowances

Yes, it’s true. We like to believe that any seam allowance will do, but in terms of accuracy, consistency is your best friend.

I’ve changed my seam allowance slightly in the middle of projects only to find it doesn’t fit with all of the other pieces.

I usually create a guide on my sewing machine for each project or quilt and stick with it. Replacing the tape as necessary.

4: Starching Fabrics Prior to Beginning

This has to be the most underrated tip, so many quilters think this is completely optional.

But I’m sad to be the one to say, starching is really helpful (essential?) for getting crisp corners, straight seams and less fraying.

There are lots of starches, I’d suggest finding one that works for you.

The Fiore block is a wonderful opportunity to try out all of these tips. Precise cuts are definitely in your future, happy quilting!
