I’ve had the emence pleasure of participating in the 12 Minis in 12 Months this year! Each block has different techniques to help step up our piecing and quilting skills.
The Kilter block was inspired by from an episode of Ugliest House in America. The construction and design help introduce quilters to strip piecing and on point block construction (2 things I’m partial to).
Mini quilts make for small pieces so I thought I’d share some tips to help you.
THREAD
With small pieces, you’ll want the best chance at your seams laying flat. I recommend using an 80wt thread as the top thread and bobbin. It’s thinner, but still strong.
I’m partial to Aurifil, but other popular brands have an 80wt option.
STARCH OR ALTERNATIVE
Whether you starch and a starch alternative (e.g. Flatter, Best Press, etc.), either will can be very effective. I prefer Faultless Magic Quilt & Crafting spray and Flatter. Use it when you’re prepping your fabrics and when you sew your block. Using a mister helps spread the product evenly over the fabric.
CLAPPER
No, I don’t mean someone to cheer you on. Although that is nice to have. After you’ve pressed your seam, letting it cool under a tailer’s clapper will help set it.
There are different styles – long bar, square. One of each allows you to handle individual seams and whole blocks.
