I wanted to share a fun way to use your Checkered Star Mini quilt block this month. I love mini quilts for my wall and also love that there are so many other fun uses for mini quilt patterns. I decided to turn my little mini blocks into pockets for a bag!
I started by picking a pattern. I checked the measurements to make sure my little Checkered Star Mini block would be small enough to fit in the pocket of the pattern I selected. The block and the pockets size seamed to be a perfect match for each other.
I made two of my the Checkered Star Mini blocks. It was simple enough to add on a border around the blocks that were a few inches wide. (I made them larger than the actual pocket so I could trim them down to size and square them up real nice.) Then I made my quilt sandwiches with Soft and Stable and the lining fabric. and quilted them up!
After I quilted the blocks I trimmed them down to the pocket size and sewed them up into the bag. The bag I made is own of not newest bag patterns the All the Things Tote. It is made with soft and stable and has an acrylic base stabilizer in the bottom that gives it great structure.
I am so happy with how the pockets turned out using the mini block. I used Big Sur Canvas for the exterior of the bag along with a new Leah Duncan print for the lining. I used a decorative handle webbing for the handles. I picked up all the fabrics and supplies from Sewtopia.
I hope you enjoyed seeing another way to use these mini quilt blocks. I’ve loved seeing your mini quilts this month. Be sure to use the #checkeredstarmini and the #12minisin12months2023 hashtags so we can see your beautiful minis.
